Duolingo for homework

Thursday, 23 February 2017

Today we looked at more questions!?

3 ways to ask a question
1. Est-ce que (add est-ce que to the beginning of a statement to make it a question!)
2. Inversion (switch the subject and the verb, adding a "-" in-between)
3. Intonation (it's all about the tone of voice and punctuation)

E.g. Tu voyages en France.
1. Est-ce que tu voyages en France?
2. Voyages-tu en France?
3. Tu voyages en France?

We practiced this.

Also...
- Played a couple rounds of Kahoot
- Entrevue Flash (1) questions (see Quizlet)

QUIZ DEMAIN
- multiple choice section where you will be choosing the answer based on the question or vice versa
- on the 3 different types of questions
- answers some of the questions from Entrevue Flash (taken from the speed dating and basic questions you identified knowing from French 8)

Duolingo is daily homework :)

Thank you for being respectful and giving it your best shot!
It was a lot of fun :)

Some examples of French slang seen in class:
meuf - femme
ouf - fou
céfran - français

We did a listening activity about Stromae's life and career, and finished the class with some fill in the blank question words.

Devoirs: We will go over the questions tomorrow, with a few minutes to review with your group. Please do your Duolingo homework!

Friday, 17 February 2017

Thursday we looked at Question words! (Les mots interrogatifs)

We watched this music video: À quoi tu penses? (what are you thinking about) and tried to answer the question for the main character, as well as talked about the importance of listening to music in French class (knowing the 'why' is important!)

Here is the Quizlet of the Question words we learned: https://quizlet.com/151915434/les-mots-interrogatifs-question-words-flash-cards/

We then did a Speed Dating activity using the questions (and some of the love expressions we learned, just for fun)

Bon weekend
Reminder that Duolingo is not for homework on days off!

Wednesday, 15 February 2017

- Quiz today (en/au/aux/à)
- Corrected #1-6 on article about la Saint Valentin
- We watched a music video (Il Avait les mots - Sheryfa Luna)
- Reviewed reading strategies (see previous post)
- You read about Le Gabon/Le Maroc/L'Algérie and la Saint Valentin using the reading strategies and the highlighting technique
- We went over the answers together (#7-12)
- We went over some "speed dating" questions for an activity tomorrow (not real speed dating, don't worry!) You practiced the following questions and answers, using your own information. As a ticket out the door today, I asked you one of them.

Bonjour! - You should start every conversation with hello :)
(What is your name?) Comment t'appelles-tu? Je m'appelle...
(Where do you live?) Où habites-tu? J'habite...
(What do you do in life?) Que fais-tu dans la vie? Je suis...
(What do you like?) Qu'est-ce que tu aimes? J'aime...
(What do you dislike?) Qu'est-ce que tu n'aimes pas? Je n'aime pas...

Don't forget to do Duolingo!

Tuesday, 14 February 2017

1. We reviewed en/au/aux/à => QUIZ DEMAIN!!
2. We did some St. Valentin related activities (Song + lyrics, How to express your love)
3. We did a reading on how Valentines Day is celebrated in some different countries

Reading Strategies
>> Title / Images (to figure out context)
>> Mots-Amis
 1. English -> words that look like English words (e.g. le shopping)
2. French -> familiar words that you know the meaning of (e.g. le courriel, la fille, les stylos)
 >> ** Golden rule: READ THE WHOLE SENTENCE. Do not go word by word. **
You can then guess based on the context of the piece and the words that you do know.

This takes practice.
Do not just put the whole article into Google Translate.
That will not help you on reading tests.

 4. You highlighted the mots-amis in different colours e.g. English (blue), French (yellow)
 5. In groups you answered questions #1-6 (for homework if not finished)

Don't forget to do your daily homework of Duolingo! (This week Tues, Weds, Thurs. Make-up day is Saturday)

Song we listened to: Ma Meilleure - La Fouine

Friday, 10 February 2017

1. We reviewed a bit what we talked about last day, and then sang along to the African countries with French-speakers (see previous post) as you filled in a goal-setting sheet telling you the grammar points you will be learning. (Keep this in your binders! You will complete the page at the end of the unit, reflecting on how you did)

2. In table groups you looked for patterns in the following (to try and figure out when to use à/au/aux/en)

Habiter = to live

Elle habite à Surrey
Elle habite à Hawaii (nm)
Elle habite à Ottawa
Elle habite à Cuba (nf)

Elle habite aux États-Unis (nmpl)
Elle habite aux Pays-Bas (nmpl)

Elle habite au Japon (nm)
Elle habite au Portugal (nm)
Elle habite en Écosse (nf)
Elle habite en Ouganda (nm)
Elle habite en Angleterre (nf)
Elle habite en Iran (nm)

We found out:
AUX = plural
À = cities, islands (often has no article-le/la/les)
--
AU = masculine
EN = feminine, or masculine starts with vowel

>> We talked about liaison (vowel/consonant sound)
e.g. aux États-Unis - "O-zeh-ta-zU-nee"

>> We talked about the silent h in habite (and if it's plural, e.g. Elles habitent) the ent is also silent.

3. You filled in the sheet "Où est-ce qu'ils habitent" E.g. (Le Gabon) Les Gabonais habitent au Gabon, we went over the answers.

4. You practiced this orally in pairs, switching roles

Person A: Tu aimes ________? (you like...?)

Person B: Oui! J’habite _______! (I live...)
OR
Oui Je vais ______! (I am going....)
OR
Oui! Je voyage ___________! (I am traveling...)

5.  We played a KAHOOT to solidify everything!

(Block B/D- We listened to a song called "C'est la vie" by Khaled, a singer from Algeria! The lyrics are both in French and Arabic. We learned what the Futur Proche is, and you told your group what you were going to do after school)

Devoirs: Duolingo (I am only counting SCHOOL days. Due to the snow and confusion this week, I will be seeing if you completed at least 20XP- 2 days worth of homework. I won't be looking at the days you completed them.)

Wednesday, 8 February 2017

We started our first unit "En route vers la Francophonie!"
- We did a Kahoot! to test our prior knowledge, and to figure out "What is la Francophonie?"
- We learned that “La Francophonie as it is now known can be defined as the world community of French-speaking countries, or the collective unit formed by French-speaking people” (source)
- We watched a video that showed many different French accents from around the world (Cameroon, France, Québec, Belgium...) See video HERE
- We had a mini discussion about the debate surrounding the "best" or "ideal" accent (and that there isn't one!)

English from Britain is not "better" than English from Canada,
just like French from France is not "better" than French from Canada.

- I talked briefly about the differing accents (Québec/France) and word choice regarding anglicisms (le shopping vs. le magasinage) paired with short videos on the phenomenons.
- In table groups you filled in a map of the world that included some (not all) of the countries that have French speakers, we went over the answers
- We watched this video about French-speaking countries of Africa (and you were encouraged to sing along!)

You completed a 3 2 1
3 things you learned
2 things you already knew
1 question/thing you wonder about

Devoirs: Duolingo!
